MELBOURNE, Aug 26 AAP - AJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Yosei
kicks off a spring campaign aimed at more Group One glory at
Caulfield on Saturday.
But trainer Stuart Webb is not expecting too much from her
first-up in the Group Three HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m).
The Invincible Spirit filly progressed quickly from a Benalla
two-year-old maiden (1106m) victory on debut in February and
raced in three states in her initial preparation with her next
five starts all being in Group races.
Michelle Payne, who has ridden the filly in all of her races,
retains the mount on Saturday.
Webb is looking for a solid first-up showing from Yosei as he
expects Saturday week's Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) at
Flemington to be a stronger race.
"She's definitely on a Thousand Guineas and possibly a VRC Oaks
preparation and I'd expect her to be finishing off well late,"
Webb said.
"But probably over 1200 metres there are sharper, more brilliant
horses around.
"I think her constitution took her a long way last time, being
able to travel up to Sydney and settle in and eat so well.
"She'll be more competitive when she gets to 1400 or 1600
metres.
"She had exactly five weeks in the paddock when she arrived back
from Sydney and then four weeks at Rockmount on the water-walker
pre-training and under saddle and she's been back here at
Caulfield eight weeks.
"She's had a good grounding but she's still carrying plenty of
condition and there will definitely be improvement through her
second and third runs.
"After Saturday she'll go to the Thousand Guineas Prelude in
three weeks and at this stage probably to Sydney for the Flight
Stakes before coming back for the Thousand Guineas.
"I think she can get to the Oaks. We all know that you don't
necessarily have to be a great stayer to get the trip (2500m).
"You just have to have a good constitution and be able to settle
and in all her races she just wants to come back under Michelle
and hit the line.
"So if she can do that and still be sound and well going into
it, I think she'll be competitive."
