SYDNEY, Sept 1 AAP - Bart Cummings has been given a timely boost
with talented three-year-old Goldstone producing a debut win at
Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Cummings is in hospital recovering from a fractured pelvis
suffered in a fall at his home earlier this week.
His grandson James Cummings, who is also the stable's
representative, says the legendary trainer is doing well.
"He's fine, I spoke to him this morning, he'll probably spend a
week in there and then be back at home," Cummings said.
"We're due for a bit of a change in luck and we got a bit more
today. Let's hope for further turns of luck in the future."
The 82-year-old trainer had only recently returned to the races
after a bout of pneumonia kept him away from the track for many
weeks over the autumn and winter carnivals.
Goldstone showed he was a horse of the future with his debut
victory, responding when challenged in the straight to win the
Members' Terraces Handicap (1150m) by a short half head from
Renewed Vitality.
James Cummings said the son of Shamardal was nominated for all
the good three-year-old races including the Group One Spring
Champion Stakes.
"We sent Kudakulari down to Melbourne, he's going to go towards
the Caulfield Guineas now and Bart promised us we'd keep this
bloke around for the Spring Champion Stakes," Cummings said.
"I think when he gets up to a trip he might be even more
dynamic.
"I really think we've got something there, but where we channel
it is the question," Cummings said.
The Cummings spring carnival team is hitting its straps with Cox
Plate winner So You Think making a successful return last
Saturday as he prepares for his defence of Australia's
weight-for-age championship.
VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume and Queensland Derby winner
Dariana are among the stable's leading lights heading to the
Melbourne Cup which Cummings has won 12 times.
