SYDNEY Aug 28 AAP - Chris Waller only had runners in one of the
four feature races at Rosehill on Saturday but that was all he
needed to claim another stakes victory.
A week after training the trifecta in the Group Two Warwick
Stakes, Waller produced Snow Alert to win the Listed Premier's
Cup (1800m) by a length over Scouting Wide in race record time.
The in-form Rosehill trainer is keen to test Snow Alert over
more ground this preparation and believes if the dual Listed
winner can stretch to 2400m he is capable of becoming a genuine
Group One or Group Two contender.
"I think he can get further and if he can he could be a Group
Two or even Group One horse, who knows," Waller said.
Damien Oliver was instructed to be positive on Snow Alert ($5)
from his wide barrier, with Waller frightened favourite Scouting
Wide ($3.50) would be able to dictate in front on his own terms.
Snow Alert went forward three wide in the early stages until
Oliver was able to get the five-year-old one off the fence just
behind Scouting Wide in the lead.
Tye Angland had his rivals chasing on Scouting Wide approaching
the home turn but Snow Alert stayed in touch and hit the front
shortly after straightening.
It was the first time Snow Alert had raced over further than
1600m and he was strong to the line in the 1800m contest.
"It was a good staying test today because the leader had them
off the bridle turning for home," Waller said.
"We're a good miler and we were off the bridle too, just, but he
managed to stay there and it was a very good win.
"He's come back really well this time in, and he went out that
way too at the end of last preparation."
Snow Alert will be nominated for Friday's Listed Wyong Gold Cup
(2100m) with the Group Three Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) on
September 16 also being targeted.
The Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) later in the spring
is also being considered if he continues to handle the rise in
distance.
Trainer Tim Martin said Scouting Wide would have his next start
in the Newcastle Cup.
"It was a good honest run from him today and as the races get
further he'll get better," Martin said.
The Mike Moroney-trained Abitofado finished third, half a head
behind Scouting Wide.
