SYDNEY, Aug 28 AAP - A comprehensive win by Verballed at
Rosehill has set her up for a tilt at black type in the Tibbie
Stakes at next month's Newcastle carnival.
The mare was up behind the leaders to the turn in Saturday's
Philip Stephens Memorial (1200m) and gathered them in to beat
Mindreader by a comfortable 1-1/4 lengths.
Trained by the father-son partnership of Neville and Chris
Voigt, Verballed was sent out the $3.70 favourite while
Mindreader was a $51 chance.
First Look ($13) ran third with Mindreader's stablemate Mustard
($26) a close fourth.
But honours were with Verballed who is raced by businessman
Gerry Harvey.
"Chris and I have been training together for about six weeks and
it's good, he's doing all the work," Neville Voigt said.
"She is a good mare and trialled well on Monday coming into
today."
Chris Voigt said he was happy to be training alongside his
father, a former popular jockey.
"I couldn't be happier, we've had two winners together so far,"
he said.
"I think there's more to come from her and she will go to the
Tibbie at Newcastle and then who knows.
"There are plenty of mares races around at this time of year."
The Listed Tibbie Stakes (1400m) is on September 16, the second
day of the Newcastle Cup carnival.
John McNair was happy with his charges, Mindreader and
13-year-old Mustard.
"Mustard is not a great weight carrier and it was his best run
with a weight like that (58.5kg)," McNair said.
"Mindreader is a real trier and he likes Rosehill so we will
bring him back here again."
