| BRISBANE, Aug 28 AAP - Dual Group One
winner Shoot Out has capped his stellar three-year-old season by
being named Queensland's Horse of the Year.
During the autumn, Shoot Out won the Randwick Guineas and AJC
Australian Derby to earn Racing Queensland's highest honour in
Brisbane on Saturday night.
He is trained by John Wallace and his regular rider is Stathi
Katsidis, both of whom were also honoured.
Wallace received the Jim Atkins Queensland Trainer of the Year
award named after the legendary trainer who died earlier this
month while Katsidis was the George Moore Jockey of the Year.
Katsidis also won the South East Queensland
Metropolitan-Provincial jockey premiership while Michael Hellyer
was the Ken Russell apprentice of the year.
The Racing Queensland Hall of Fame welcomed two new members -
pioneer female jockey Pam O'Neill and administrator Bob Bentley.
O'Neill was a trailblazer for women jockeys in Australia, waging
a long battle for the right to ride against men.
She rode in women only races in the 1970s before finally
receiving a licence to ride in open races in 1979.
Bentley is a long time administrator who is currently the
serving chairman of the Australian Racing Board in addition to
fulfilling that role with Racing Queensland.
He began his racing career as treasurer of the Queensland
Bloodhorse Breeders and in 1990 assumed the position of chairman
of the struggling Ipswich Turf Club.
In recent times he has overseen the amalgamation of Brisbane's
two metropolitan race clubs.
