| SYDNEY, Aug 24 AAP - Gerald Ryan's
Golden Rose wish for Hinchinbrook came true while rival trainer
Mathew Ellerton had his concerns about Crystal Lily following
the barrier draw for Saturday's $1 million race.
Content with his 11th hour decision to start Hinchinbrook in the
Group One feature at Rosehill, Ryan declared before the draw:
"I'd love a good barrier."
His request was delivered in spades with Hinchinbrook coming up
with gate four.
"He's drawn well, it gives you options and he's going to get
cover which is important," Ryan said.
"I said drawing inside six would be nice ... he'll get his
chance from there."
Hinchinbrook was paid up for as final acceptor after Ryan was
satisfied the colt had made a full recovery from a minor virus.
The result of a jumpout with two stablemates on Tuesday morning
convinced Ryan to produce a Group One U-turn with Hinchinbrook.
"The way he came off the track on Saturday, I was thinking about
it (the Golden Rose) because of the way he was bucking and
jumping around," Ryan said.
"He had a jumpout this morning and that convinced me he's fit
enough."
Corey Brown has been booked to ride Hinchinbrook after Blake
Shinn failed to secure a release from Decision Time.
Crystal Lily, one of five fillies in the field, has drawn gate
10 of 15.
"I've got mixed feelings. It's not the best draw," Ellerton
said.
Crystal Lily is weighted to carry 56kg in Saturday's Group Three
HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield but Ellerton said a final
decision on where she runs was up to the filly's owner-breeder
David Moodie.
"We're looking for a good track basically," Ellerton said.
Crystal Lily will meet Panipique 2.5kg better at the weights in
the Golden Rose for finishing a three-quarter length runner-up
to the Peter Moody filly in the Quezette Stakes (1100m) at
Caulfield on August 14.
"It was disappointing to see her get beaten but I wasn't
disappointed with how she went," Ellerton said.
Crystal Lily has been posted as $4.60 second favourite to add
the Golden Rose to her Golden Slipper win at Rosehill in April.
Masquerader holds a narrow call for favouritism with TAB
Sportsbet at $4.20.
The David Payne-trained galloper, who resumed with an
eye-catching second in the Run To The Rose, drew perfectly in
gate two.
Jockey Hugh Bowman said of the barrier: "I think it's perfect,
I'm delighted with the draw.
"I'll just have him where he lands. I haven't gone through the
race yet but I can't see myself getting too far back.
"He's a pretty smart horse and barrier two is a big help."
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Squamosa will have to overcome the
second widest draw to maintain his unbeaten record.
"It's a bit of a bugger (drawing 14)," jockey Nash Rawiller
said.
"He's got the tactical speed though to hopefully overcome that."
