MELBOURNE, Aug 28 AAP - Melbourne's wet weather gave noted
first-up specialist Rightfully Yours the edge over his rivals in
the Listed Clamms Seafood Stakes at Caulfield.
Trainer Mick Price kept a close eye on the weather and track
conditions this week, believing that a soft track would nullify
the brilliance of the majority of the field in Saturday's 1100m
event.
Although a noted first-up performer, Rightfully Yours is
something of a 1400m specialist with five wins over that
distance and Price was keen to exploit his strength on a
stamina-sapping track against a field of speedsters better
suited on a firmer surface.
"He's such a good horse fresh but the 1100 metres probably
wasn't ideal on top of the ground. But with the wet track, and
the slower sectionals, it probably helped him a fair bit," Price
said.
Rightfully Yours is an older brother to Price's Cox Plate
hopeful Heart Of Dreams but while the six-year-old has his fair
share of ability the trainer is not aiming at any lofty spring
goals at this stage.
"He's a really nice horse fresh and I'd prefer to keep him that
way and restrict him to races where he can win," he said.
"The owner has an idea of running in the Rupert Clark Stakes
later on but we'll see how we go."
Rightfully Yours was ridden patiently by Glen Boss who pushed
him through a gap when it appeared early in the straight.
Once clear of the ruck, Boss and Rightfully Yours nabbed
Stanzout near the line to win by a short neck with late closer
Returntosender filling third place 2-3/4 lengths back.
