MELBOURNE, Aug 29 AAP - Leading trainer Lee Freedman will kick
off the spring campaign of imported galloper Fanjura in
Saturday's Group Two Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.
Raced by the Ball And Chain No. 2 Syndicate along with other
stable clients, the gelding has won six of his 15 starts up to
2000m and is unbeaten in two starts in Australia.
He won over 1700m at Caulfield at his first appearance for the
Freedman stable in March and was spelled after taking out the
Group Three Easter Cup (2000m) at the same track on April 3.
"I'm pleased with him. I don't know about him making dramatic
improvement this time around as he is a six-year-old," Freedman
said.
"His improvement won't be due to age, it'll be more due to
settling in and he's not the flashest track worker so we don't
get a huge vibe about him. We didn't when he raced here in the
autumn.
"The horse is really well. He's had a good grounding for a
first-up run and I'm looking forward to getting him going."
Fanjura, who hasn't raced beyond 2080m, is nominated for The
Metropolitan, the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and the Melbourne
Cup.
"I think given where he's at in terns of handicaps, probably the
Caulfield Cup is going to be the primary objective because he
hasn't got weight-for-age credentials yet," Freedman said.
"Hopefully he might gather some over the spring but I think the
fact that he hasn't raced beyond 2000 metres isn't really an
impediment to his chances in a race like the Caulfield Cup
because he looks to me like a horse who'd handle 2400 metres
pretty easily."
Among the horses Fanjura is likely to meet in the Makybe Diva
Stakes (1600m) include Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, Victoria
Derby winner Monaco Consul, last year's winner Vigor and Mick
Price's class-acts Heart Of Dreams and Predatory Pricer.
Weights for the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup will be
released on Wednesday.
