Cassidy fined for whip overuse

SYDNEY, Aug 25 AAP - Jim Cassidy's winning ride on Needwood Lad at Canterbury on Wednesday has cost him $1000 and a two day ban for breaching the whip rules.

Needwood Lad won the Winning Post Restaurant Handicap by a half head over Sir Gwynn in a driving finish at the end of 2800 metres.

Stewards found Cassidy guilty of using the whip in consecutive strides more than allowable before the 100 metres.

"I'm just trying to get home for the punters and keep the TAB happy," Cassidy said.

Cassidy pleaded guilty to the charge and will miss the two-day Wyong Cup carnival next week but will be free to ride at Flemington on September 4.

Cassidy said he was scheduled to ride Love Conquers All in the Gilgai Stakes and Danleigh in the Group Two Makybe Diva Stakes on the same day.
